Departments searching for a Police Dog Grant, K9 Grant, or law enforcement K9 grant program may qualify to receive a fully trained, deployment-ready police K9 at no cost to the agency. The department is responsible only for the required K9 handler training.
Our Police Dog Grant Placement Program is designed to help police departments, sheriff’s offices, constable agencies, task forces, and other law enforcement agencies establish or expand a K9 unit without the significant cost normally associated with purchasing and training a police dog.
The cost of purchasing a trained police dog can prevent smaller and rural law enforcement agencies from starting a K9 unit.
Universal K9’s Police K9 Grant Program helps remove that financial barrier by providing qualifying departments with access to a trained working K9 at no cost.
Instead of requiring an agency to purchase a police dog, Universal K9 provides the K9 through our grant placement program while the department provides an approved handler and completes the required handler training.
This makes it possible for more agencies to obtain a working police K9 while maintaining the training and operational standards required for successful deployment.
Universal K9 has trained and supported more than 500 officer and K9 teams nationwide.

Eligible agencies may include municipal police departments, sheriff’s offices, constable offices, rural police departments, task forces, and other qualified law enforcement agencies.
Departments seeking a Police Dog Grant or K9 Grant should have an identified K9 handler and command-level approval before beginning the placement review process.
Agencies that meet the program requirements may be considered for a no-cost police dog placement through Universal K9.
Police Dog Grant placements are limited because every K9 and law enforcement agency must meet Universal K9’s qualification and training requirements.
Availability may also depend on the type of police K9 needed and the number of qualified dogs currently available for placement.

Qualified agencies may be considered for a single-purpose narcotics or explosives detection K9. Suitable shelter-dog candidates are evaluated for drive, confidence and detection potential; not every dog qualifies. This program does not include bite-work development.
Dual-purpose teams combine detection work with patrol functions. These breed-specific working dogs are sourced separately through trusted vendors and matched to an agency’s operational requirements.
After placement, the first week is used for the dog and assigned handler to bond. Live online handler development then takes approximately two weeks. Universal K9 develops teams to working standards, and independent third-party certification is required before deployment.
