Turn Suitable High-Drive Shelter Dogs Into Working K9 Candidates
Universal K9 works with animal-shelter staff and volunteers to identify and develop suitable high-drive dogs for single-purpose narcotics detection and other approved detection or service potential. Universal K9 does not simply take dogs from shelters, and not every shelter dog is a candidate.
Through live video instruction, shelter teams learn how to evaluate drive, build engagement, establish structured routines and progress suitable dogs toward detection work and possible placement with law-enforcement agencies.
How the Shelter Dog Program Works
1. Candidate Identification and Selection Testing
Shelter staff and volunteers learn to recognize traits such as strong hunt or toy drive, environmental confidence, engagement and the energy required for working-dog development.
2. Guided Daily Development
The shelter team works with the dog locally while Universal K9 provides live video guidance, evaluation and progression planning. Development typically takes approximately 5 to 8 weeks, depending on the individual dog and program requirements.
3. Detection Preparation
The program focuses on detection and service potential. It does not include bite-work development. Dual-purpose patrol dogs are sourced separately through trusted vendors.
4. Department Placement and Handler Development
When a dog is suitable and a placement is approved, the receiving agency assigns a handler. The first week after placement is used for bonding, followed by approximately two weeks of live online handler development. Independent third-party certification is required.
